Preparing for Feel Day: Relearning Joy Through Movement

Posted on 2/6/2026 by Mina Vera
Adults playing outside. As I prepare for Feel Day, I keep coming back to one simple question: When was the last time I felt pure joy in my body? Not productivity. Not accomplishment. Just joy.

As a kid, joy was easy. It lived in movement that had no purpose beyond fun—dancing in the living room, running barefoot, spinning until the world blurred. There was no choreography, no “correct” way to move, and definitely no pressure to perform. Movement was instinctual, playful, and free.

Somewhere along the way, we grow up. Movement becomes structured. Exercise becomes something we do rather than something we feel. Even as instructors, we can forget what it’s like to move without a plan.

That’s where Feel Day comes in.

Feel Day isn’t about perfect flows or polished sequences. It’s about reconnecting with that childlike sense of play—the kind that exists before comparison, before judgment, before the need to get it “right.” As I prepare to lead a Dancing Yoga experience for Feel Day, I’ve realized something surprising: even though I teach both Zumba and yoga, creating a dancing yoga flow feels like a challenge.

Zumba gives me freedom through rhythm and repetition. Yoga gives me grounding through breath and intention. Dancing yoga asks me to merge the two in a way that’s intuitive rather than instructional—and that’s uncomfortable. There’s no rigid structure to hide behind. No counts to follow. No traditional poses to rely on.

And honestly? That discomfort is the point.

Trying to recreate the feeling of joy from childhood means letting go of control. It means trusting the body instead of directing it. It means allowing moments of awkwardness, laughter, and imperfection to exist in the room. That’s hard—even for someone who teaches movement for a living.

But it’s also deeply healing.

As I’ve been preparing, I’ve stopped asking, “Does this look good?” and started asking, “Does this feel good?” I’ve let music guide me instead of sequences. I’ve allowed pauses, spontaneous movement, and moments where the class might not move in unison—and that’s okay.

Feel Day is an invitation to remember who we were before movement became serious. Before fitness trackers, mirrors, and expectations. It’s a reminder that joy is not something we have to earn—it’s something we can access when we give ourselves permission.

If you’re coming to Feel Day, know this: you don’t need dance experience. You don’t need flexibility. You don’t need to know what comes next. All you need is a willingness to play.

Sometimes the most powerful practice isn’t about learning something new—it’s about remembering what was already there.
