Stepping into Pickleball

Expanding My Horizons: From Learning to Teaching Pickleball This May
Growth doesn’t happen when things feel easy—it happens when you challenge yourself to step into something new. Over the past few weeks, I’ve done exactly that by beginning my journey into pickleball. And now, I’m excited to share that starting in May, I’ll be taking that next step: teaching.
I didn’t wait until I felt “perfect” to begin. I started as a student—learning the rules, understanding the flow of the game, and getting comfortable with the nuances that make pickleball both strategic and fun. There’s something humbling about being new at something again. It forces you to slow down, pay attention, and stay open.
That experience has been a reminder of what so many of my students feel when they walk into a class for the first time. The uncertainty, the curiosity, the willingness to try. Being back in that space has made me a more empathetic and aware instructor—not just in pickleball, but across everything I teach.
What draws me to pickleball is its energy. It’s social, accessible, and genuinely fun. You don’t need an extensive background in sports to enjoy it, and that’s what makes it so powerful. It brings people together quickly. It creates connection without pressure. And in a world where people are craving both movement and community, that combination matters.
As someone who works closely with a wide range of individuals—including active older adults—I also see how impactful pickleball can be from a wellness perspective. It builds coordination, supports cardiovascular health, and improves agility, all while being low-impact and approachable. It meets people where they are, and that’s something I deeply value in any form of movement.
Now, stepping into teaching feels like the natural next phase. Not because I’ve mastered it—but because I respect it enough to continue learning while guiding others. That’s how I approach everything I teach. You don’t have to know everything to lead—you just have to be committed, prepared, and willing to grow alongside your students.
Starting in May, I’ll be offering pickleball instruction as part of my expanding lineup of classes. This isn’t about adding something new just for the sake of it—it’s about continuing to evolve, both personally and professionally, and creating more opportunities for people to move, connect, and try something different.
There’s a bigger message here, too. Expanding your horizons doesn’t require a complete life overhaul. Sometimes it looks like saying yes to one new thing, sticking with it, and allowing it to open new doors.
If you’ve been thinking about trying something new, consider this your reminder: you don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start—and be willing to keep going.
I’m stepping onto the court not just as a student, but as a teacher in progress. And honestly, that’s exactly where the growth happens. |
